Girls soccer falls late to Trojans

When looking at the rosters of conference unbeatens Northampton and Parkland, head coach Gus Belaires saw that there was a discrepancy in numbers.

Trojans coach Al Haddad used about 20 of his 24 rostered players, but Belaires just did not have the numbers to do so.

While the Parkland players were able to stay fresh, the Konkrete Kids core was forced to play the majority of the game.

That may have caught up to them, as Parkland (5-0 overall, 4-0 East Penn Conference) edged Northampton (3-2 overall, 3-1 EPC) 1-0 on a second half goal from Rachel Medlar.

"I started nine freshman and sophomores, so we have a lot of young girls out there playing against a good team," said Belaires. "We don't have a lot of depth on the bench. Ten girls played every minute of the game tonight. So I think that wore us down."

Parkland had a flurry of chances throughout the game, and dominated possession and shots on goal. The Konkrete Kids didn't record their first opportunity until late in the first half, after the Trojans had already had eight shots on net. It had the feel of an early playoff game, as both teams came out playing physical.

If it wasn't for the outstanding play of sophomore goal keeper Keffer, Parkland would have taken a multiple goal lead earlier in the game. But Keffer made save after save and frustrated the Trojans with each and every attempt.

"She was outstanding tonight," noted Belaires. "She really kept us in the game and made some great saves."

Medlar was close to notching a goal midway through the first half, but a lob effort that seemingly had eyes for the corner, was punched away at the last second by a diving Keffer.

But it was only a matter of time for Parkland, as they kept putting pressure on Keffer's net.

Guetzlaff found Medlar, who was marked tightly with a defender on her back. The sophomore turned and ripped a shot that Keffer just could not make another spectacular save of. Parkland remained strong in the back of the defense and held firm for the shutout.

Northampton will now continue a streak against tough competition, with their next game on Thursday against Emmaus, followed by a matchup against Central Catholic.
