Bethlehem field hockey teams struggle early
Bethlehem's field hockey teams entered this week a combined 1-11 after the first full week of the season took place.
Things will need to drastically change for the likes of Liberty, Freedom and Bethlehem Catholic, if they want to stay in contention for the playoffs through midseason.
Liberty (0-5) has been on the wrong end of each contest so far, but they've also been stuck with a brutal schedule to this point, as their five opponents have a combined record of 19-1 through this week.
The Hurricanes have played tough so far this season, dropping a 2-1 opener to Moravian Academy and then falling to a talented Northampton side 1-0 before facing a lopsided defeat to Parkland, 8-0.
Liberty fell to Northern Lehigh 2-0 over the weekend to give Mary Kate Omdahl a challenging task at turning things around for her squad.
"For one, we started off with a very difficult schedule," Omdhal said. "We are young in age and experience and still struggling to find our identity on the field. I have seen some improvements, but we are continuously tweaking things at practice. We are looking for ways to build upon the positives that have worked for us."
Freedom's (1-4) lone victory of the season came over Wilson during a 6-0 non-league affair, but things have been even tougher on the Pates in East Penn Conference play.
With losses to Nazareth, Emmaus, Whitehall and Stroudsburg the Pates were outscored by the opposition 31-0. With a week filled with former Mountain Valley Conference opponents, including Monday's 3-0 defeat against Pleasant Valley, Freedom can get themselves back on track when they take on East Stroudsburg South today and Pocono Mountain West on Friday.
Bethlehem Catholic (0-5) has struggled to stay competitive through their first five matches, as they haven't been able to come closer than five goal deficits in each of their losses.
The Hawks get a chance to come away with their first result of the season today, when they take on East Stroudsburg North (1-4) at home.
