Girls beat 'Canes; Boys start 1-1

The boys soccer team was involved in two, 1-0 games to start their season, winning one of them.

The Kids needed extra time to notch their first win of the season on Friday versus a feisty Colonial League opponent in Notre Dame Green Pond.

Cameron Peploe scored in the fourth minute of overtime, drilling a hard shot low to the far post for the 1-0. victory. The winning goal was set up when Jared Fantasia took the ball up the right flank and fed Peploe, who dribbled 15 yards before getting off the winning shot.

Northampton had plenty of good chances to win in regulation, but couldn't quite find the back of the net. Yamil Yunez volleyed a cross from Tom Reinhard but was saved beautifully by ND goalie Timmy Gallagher earlier in the first half.

Chad O'Donnell nearly put the game away with 9 minutes remaining. He drilled a shot near post but Gallagher got barely a hand on the ball to push it wide. Peploe also had a shot saved with 7 minutes left.

"I knew this was going to be a weird game," coach Craig Carvin said afterward. "We played on a smaller pitch, with higher grass so we weren't able to execute the way we're used to playing. We just weren't able to play at our pace. It was a tough game but we got the win."

Kids goalie Austin Cooper had four saves for the shutout.

Northampton played its first home match of the season and lost a tough one to Liberty Saturday morning, 1-0.

At the 13th minute of play, Northampton defender Matt Peluszak took down a Liberty player just inside the 18 box. Liberty was awarded a penalty kick with Colin Muller capitalizing for the only goal of the day.

The Kids couldn't muster up any form of an attack to counter the deficit. They had trouble connecting passes in the midfield all day.

The best chances to tie the game came in the first half. A.J. Schroettner and Cameron Peploe fired shots in the box but to no avail at the 21 minute mark. The very best goal chance came when Nathaniel Treichler hit the crossbar off a Yamil Yunez corner kick with four minutes left in the first half.

"This was a tough loss because it counts toward the EPC records," Carvin said. "Five teams qualify into the league playoffs as a wild card, and this would have been a good game to take toward that total. I think we were too hyped up from last night's overtime win over Notre Dame."

Northampton traveled to Allen on Wednesday after Press deadlines, and was scheduled to host Bethlehem Catholic Friday.
