For Nicole Hudak, June was anything but a walk in the park.
Hudak, who is eight months pregnant, lost her home in Northampton to a fire June 12.
"My dad was inside sleeping," Hudak said. He escaped but one of the family cats, Mama, perished in the fire. Four days later, Ted, a second feline, was found perched at his usual location, a bay window.
The Hudaks lost everything in the house, which is being demolished. The 28-year-old expectant mother is now living at her aunt's home in Cementon.
Jeanne McNeill of Hokendauqua was in her car when her daughter told her about the fire at Nicole's home.
"We go way back. We know Nicole from when she was a child, my daughter and Nicole swam and played together," McNeill said.
She told her husband, state Rep. Dan McNeill.
"We both said we got to do something," she said.
They decided to follow the baby shower format but call it a fire shower. Over the course of two weeks, McNeill recruited several other women for a shower committee and then held the event June 26 at the West Catasauqua Playground building.
About 80 people attended including Hudak's mother as well as other family and friends. They showered her with baby gifts, household items and cash. Restaurants had donated food and a deejay provided music.
"I was shocked, very, very surprised. I was taken back, so excited, I had no idea," Hudak said.
"We pulled it off," McNeill said. She thanked the businesses and community for donations and credited her committee, which includes Peggy Lawlik, Tammy Sicher. Julie Snyder, Janet Geiter, Beth Blazofsky and Mary Ellen Oroskey.
