Another bridge slated for replacement

Whitehall Township certainly is seeing its share of new bridge construction. The latest one, to begin shortly is in Cementon, is a small state bridge at Clear Springs, connecting Second Street with North Whitehall Township on its north side.

The 1930s-era concrete bridge will be "demolished," according to a statement issued June 26 by Whitehall Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. The work, which will run more than $1 million, will be performed by Clear Water Construction Company, Mercer County. The contract was awarded by PennDOT.

Hozza said the bridge carries traffic from communities north of Whitehall and estimated construction will take between 18 months and two years.

Very little impact is expected at the to other significant bridge projects, including the Hokendauqua-North Catasauqua Bridge, which should be open next spring, and the Coplay-Northampton Bridge, where work has yet to begin.

The township has not received any recent timetable from PennDOT on its proposed replacement of the Route 329 Cementon-Northampton Bridge. The township has received notices that further engineering studies for the safety and widening, including signalization at the Route 145/MacArthur Road-Route 329 intersection shows no changes from its plans shown at a public hearing earlier this year. Some residents and officials recommended further safety features for the Eagle Point intersection and nearby areas.
