A place to sit
A bench outside the Coplay Public Library is accompanied by a large pot of flowers. Both are dedicated to library patron Amy Lynne Cser Bogert, who died Dec. 5, 2012, at the age of 38.
An avid reader, Bogert often visited the library and enjoyed searching for authors such as Danielle Steel, Nicholas Sparks and Steven King.
Bogert was born with degenerative disc disease. Despite this, she was an advanced swimmer and a great roller skater while in school. Around the age of 30, however, she fell on a patch of ice and then began suffering from severe back pain and spinal stenosis. She also had several herniated discs.
Despite several surgeries to correct the problems, sitting still for long periods became much more painful. She was only comfortable walking or lying down and eventually, Bogert was unable to drive.
She began going out with her walker around Coplay and these jaunts usually led her to the library.
Whenever Bogert would grow tired from walking, she'd take a rest on the seat of her walker and read a chapter or two from a book in her bag before continuing.
"My sister knew everything about the neighborhood from her walks. She knew who needed to trim their bushes, who had what breed of dog and which ones barked at her when she walked," laughed Keri (Cser) Kromer of Coplay. "Amy was always such a character."
"Amy was really very sweet and quiet when she came into the library. She would always smile and say hi to the workers. She loved to walk up and down the aisles and spent time looking through all the books before making her selections. You could tell just by the way she handled the books that she was a book lover and that she got a lot of joy out of reading," said Sharon Dougherty, Coplay library director.
Kromer remembered once her daughter Gillian was into making things with duct tape. Bogert went out to the craft store and purchased every possible color duct tape she could find for her niece.
Gillian and her brothers, Landon and Elliot, remember their Aunt Amy as their "cool aunt." It was especially hard on them when she passed because Bogert spent much time living with them over the years, Kromer said.
"Our youngest, Elliott, knows a lot about his aunt through the stories that we share with him," said Kromer. "As a Star Wars fan though, he likes to think that she's just in another galaxy and that one day she'll come back," said Cynthia Cser, who is Elliott's grandmother and Bogert and Kromer's mother.
"My sister didn't have much, and she was generous to a fault," said Kromer. She was always found giving something, whatever she had, to others."
When Bogert died, her family wanted to do something special to honor her memory. Kromer contacted the Coplay library.
"The Coplay library seemed like a fitting spot to honor Amy's memory. Amy loved Coplay and loved to read so it seemed like the perfect combination," said Kromer.
"I often find myself out front of the library and just looking at the bench and smiling," said Cser. "I can just see her sitting there out front reading at her favorite place, and I am reminded of her beautiful generous spirit."
