Coplay library to set up special sports collection

State funds will allow the Coplay Public Library to set up a special sports collection for patrons to view.

Library Director Sharon Dougherty told board members at the June 12 meeting the state recently provided $2,000 to every library within Pennsylvania to develop a special collection.

Dougherty said her intent was to display Coplay's large print collection. However, state requirements prevent the library from doing so.

"It [collection] has to be something deeper than the average library," she said.

Dougherty said, however, the library will continue to market its large print collection.

"We're going to push the large print idea," she said.

Board member Charlie Sodl said he supports the idea.

"It's important to have," he said.

Board President Janet Eisenhauer also spoke in favor of the library's large print collection.

"I commend you guys for keeping up with the large print idea," she said.

Dougherty pointed out the library does not possess a sizable large print collection due to the increased costs associated with such books.

Dougherty also reported the library has nine teen volunteers and one senior citizen volunteer for the summer reading program. According to Dougherty, roughly 12 volunteers participate every summer.

"We're pretty close to that number right now," she said.

Also during the meeting, board member and Treasurer Mel Procanyn asked Dougherty if the library can accommodate iPad and eReader devices. Dougherty said to date the library has 53 eReader books in circulation.

The board also unanimously approved the camera policy for the library.

Cameras will be placed at the exit and entrance of the library and will be monitored by the Coplay Police Department. Signs also will be posted in locations where the cameras are installed. Video will be retained by the borough for two weeks.

Before the cameras are installed, Coplay Borough Council must approve the regulation approved by the board. The date the cameras will be installed is yet to be determined.

The money for the cameras was donated by the Coplay Community Days organization.

The board also announced that summer hours for the library will begin June 24.

Also, the board announced a fundraiser will be held June 23 from 5-10 p.m. at the Blue Monkey Sports Bar & Restaurant, 1092-1094 Howertown Road, North Catasauqua.

The next library board meeting will be held 7 p.m. July 10 in the Coplay Borough municipal building, 49 S. Fifth St.
