Banners go up in Coplay
Seventy new banners have been hung recently on utility poles in Coplay Borough.
Those working on the installation May 28-30 included Charles Sodl and Steve Burker, both councilman and planning commission members, along with planning commission Chairman John Mullner, public works Director Dan Pavelko and Parks and Recreation Board member Ron Helman.
Joining them were Northampton public works crew members Metro Hucaluk, Bob Shmale and Joe Weber, who also brought Northampton's bucket truck and lift.
"We want to thank [Northampton Borough Manager] Gene Zarayko for the borough's help," Sodl said.
Sodl pointed out that no taxpayer money was used to pay for or install the banners.
Citizens, businesses and organizations purchased banner sponsorships for $250 each. The sponsor's name is located on the lower end of each banner.
The sale of banner sponsorships raised approximately $13,000, said Burker. The banners and hardware for installation ran $8,912, leaving a $4,086 profit. Members of the borough planning commission would like to use the profits to purchase at least three permanent "welcome" signs to be displayed at high traffic areas in town.
Sodl said the planning commission, which spearheaded the project, will look into putting up additional banners in 2015.
"We have received a great response and positive feedback, with many asking if they can purchase a banner and when," Burker said. Individuals, groups and organizations will be able to sponsor additional banners in February.
The banners are maroon with gold lettering and depict the Saylor Cement Kilns and the Washington School Building, which was once Coplay Hgh School and now serves as the municipal building. The borough's slogan "An Opportunity Community" is written in large gold letters on the banners.
Banners, which will remain up year round, can be found on Second, Chestnut and Hokendauaqua streets, a portion of Ruch and South Fourth streets and Center Street.
Burker said the group wanted to acknowledge Northampton Mayor Tom Reenock, Coplay Mayor Joseph Bundra, Coplay Councilman Carl Luckenbach, Coplay Planning Commission member Christine Mann, and borough Secretary-Treasurer Sandra Gyecsek for their support with the project. Burker also wishes to thank Northampton Borough Public Works Director Steve Guirney.
