Coplay question status of Coplay Cement kilns

Coplay Borough Council discussed the historical Coplay Cement Company Kilns at its June 10 meeting.

Earlier in the day, Coplay Mayor Joseph Bundra had attended The Greater Northern Lehigh and Palmerton Area Chamber of Commerce meeting. When talking to individuals after the meeting, Bundra said the kilns were discussed, and how Lehigh County is currently making no movement to refurbish them.

"I remember when the county wanted no part of the kilns," Bundra said. "They wanted Coplay to take over the kilns."

According to Bundra, $125,000 is set aside for the kilns. The last time the county worked on the kilns was six to eight years ago.

"It doesn't seem favorable that they're going to go forward and do something," he said.

Bundra recommended getting people together to speak with officials to let them know how important the kilns are to Coplay and the surrounding area.

The monuments are the oldest cement kilns in the United States and were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Also at the meeting, the Coplay Shade Tree Commission was briefly brought up.

At last week's workshop meeting, the possibility of bringing back the Shade Tree Commission had discussed.

Councilman Steve Burker noted residents expressed concern to him about where the money for planting and removing trees would come from. Burker also asked if the trees would again be planted between the curb and sidewalk.

Council President Louis Bodish and Councilman William Leiner said trees will no longer be planted between the sidewalk and the curb. After the trees grow, there is too much damage to the sidewalk and properties from the roots.

Bodish noted the trees currently removed do not require taxpayers' money. The money for the removal is coming out of a grant from sanitation.

In other business, Councilman Charles Sodl presented the final monetary report from Coplay's Sponsor a Street Banner Project.

The planning commission made $13,000 from the banner project. The money was received from individuals or businesses paying to sponsor banners. Of the money collected, $8,912.54 was spent on purchasing the 72 banners.

Sodl said the planning commission would like to spend the remaining $4,086.26 on purchasing a minimum of three permanent welcome signs for Coplay.

Borough Solicitor James Preston also announced the noise exemption for the Coplay Saengerbund was granted and will remain in effect until September 2019.

Council ended the meeting by going into an executive session for personnel matters regarding the changes to Coplay Library policies.
