Six Tigers compete in Lions All-Star Classic

The main theme of the 33rd Annual Lions All-Star Soccer Classic was fun, but competitive play. Players were selected based on their play during the season and were able to kick around for one final time as high school players.

The girls game may have been the most competitive. Lehigh Valley Conference/Mountain Valley Conference Offensive MVP Amanda McCarthy of Emmaus scored two goals, one in each half, to lead the way for a 3-1 victory over the Colonial League All-Stars.

After Pleasant Valley's Ema Sabovic opened the scoring in the 13th minute, Alicia Binn from Saucon Valley tied the game at one. But that is when McCarthy took over the game, as she took a dribble passed a defender and slotted home a goal with eight minutes left until halftime.

Her second goal, coming in the second half, gave the LVC/MVC a cushion that they wouldn't give up.

Trista Cunningham started in the back of the defense, and Grace Baker and Caity Harris also participated in the game from Northwestern.

The boys game wasn't as much of a close game, but it was still competitive and they put on a show for the crowd, netting a combined nine goals.

Offensive MVP Gio Mowrey (Notre Dame G.P.) and Luke Masiado (Saucon Valley) scored within three minutes of each other to open up the game and give the Colonial League a sizeable 2-0 lead early.

The LVC/MVC all-stars would tie the game at 2 at halftime on goals from Belal Mohamed (Parkland) and Sam Gaye (Northampton).

But once again to open up a half, the Colonial League scored two quick goals to take a two goal advantage.

Southern Lehigh's Will Demmel was followed by Brandon Ettl in putting that two goal cushion back on the board.

Gaye would do his best to keep the LVC/MVC in it with another goal, but Ryan Brown (Moravian Academy) and Matthew Palmer (Bangor) sealed the win with a goal each.

"We came out here to have fun," said Ettl. "We had a lot of good players who weren't really worried about winning, but it was nice to win. I thought in the second half we played a lot better because we were more comfortable playing together."

Ettl will be playing collegiately at Lycoming College. Fellow teammates and participants Kyle Willis and Matthew Strickland will be playing at Kings College and Penn State, respectively as Strickland looks to walk on at PSU.

Cunningham will be attending Moravian College to play basketball.
