Cement museum opens Sunday

The Northampton Area Public Library will celebrate Children's Book Week with a special storytime Tuesday, May 13, 10 a.m., at the library, 1615 Laubach Ave.

Phyllis Palamaro, author of "Farmer Bonnie and Sally the Sad Cow," will be the featured guest.

The Friends of the Northampton Area Public Library are holding a community yard sale on Saturday, May 17, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., on the grounds of the library, 1615 Laubach Ave. It will be held rain or shine.

Tables are available. Call 610-262-7537 to reserve one.

The Friends group will be selling hot dogs and baked goods and is soliciting donations of items to sell at its table. Proceeds will benefit the library.

The Atlas Cement Company Memorial Museum will open for the summer on Sunday, May 11, 1-3 p.m. Located at 1201 Laubach Ave., the musuem will remain open each second and fourth Sunday of the month, through Septmeber.

The Northampton Liederkranz, 402 E. Ninth St., will hold karaoke Friday, May 9, 9 p.m.-1 a.m.

On May 30, the band That Being Said will perform from 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Events are open to members and their guests.

Northampton AARP Chapter 3915 will meet Wednesday, May 14 at the Northampton Memorial Community Center, 1601 Laubach Ave. Doors open at noon. Refreshments will be served.

Tickets for the group's picnic are available.

Paw Prints on the Canal is scheduled for Sunday, June 1, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., along the Heritage Trail Walkway at Canal Park.

The purpose of the event is to bring awareness of rescue groups (and their pets/programs) and educate specific breed standards and adoption practices. Registration fees and proceeds from the day are donated to the Northampton Boro K-9 Police Unit.

The event is free and open to the public.

Highlights of the day include demonstrations by Officer Mullner and K-9 Zoro, a rabies and microchipping clinic, a rescue pet parade at noon, a "sharp-dressed pet" contest at 1 p.m., raffles and much more.

The Quota Club of Northampton is preparing for its annual community yard sale at Canal Park. It will be held Saturday, June 7, 8 a.m.-11 a.m. Rain date is June 8.

Quota is a community service organization dedicated to helping disadvantaged women and children and people with speech and hearing impairments. Members also look locally for needs within the borough and neighboring communities.

Proceeds of this event will be used to purchase a cardiac defibrillator for the Northampton Police Department.

Northampton VFW Post 4714 will host button-box accordion jam sessions on Friday nights, 8-11 p.m., at the Post home, 1204 Main St.

Authentic Austrian-Hungarian and German polkas and waltzes will be performed by local favorites such as Joe Weber, Emil Shanta and other accompanying accordion players.

There is a $2 donation requested.

The Friends of the Northampton Area Public Library will be sponsoring a chartered bus trip to Mutter Museum of Medical Oddities and the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia on June 20.

The bus will depart promptly at 8 a.m. from the Northampton Recreation Center, 1 Lerchenmiller Drive, and will arrive back at approximately 6 p.m.

The cost includes transportation and admissions.

For tickets, stop by the library. Seating is limited. The deadline to purchase tickets is June 5.
