Police warn of scams
Lt. Peter Nickischer, filling in for Chief Edgardo Colon, reported at the Feb. 6 Upper Macungie supervisors' meeting residents should be on guard against scams. One resident was recently bilked out of a substantial amount of money.
Nickischer said there were 732 service calls for the month, with 360 traffic citations issued. False alarms amounted to 86.
The only township recreation board program in the near future is "Tree Care," at the Independent Park Center, 6-7:30 p.m. March 4. Pickup volleyball is ongoing 8-10 p.m. Tuesdays through March 25 at Fogelsville Elementary School.
Supervisor Sam Ashmar reported on his meeting with representatives of the fire companies.
There will be a study done to ascertain the cost of upgrading and refurbishing some of the vehicles.
Good Will Fire Company's truck 2521 is 19 years old and truck 831, the Fogelsville Fire Company's aerial truck, is 15 years old.
Ashmar, in his Berks-Lehigh Regional Police report, again chastised representatives of Maxatawny Township for not coming to the meetings.
Lack of attendance is hindering resolution of the situation regarding the former joint police department.
He said the police commission could file a motion with the courts for lack of participation.
More road salt was ordered, which will be stockpiled for use. Residents were advised to dig out their fire hydrants, if they have one in their area.
Ashmar wants residents to clean off their sidewalks so others can walk safely.
However, Supervisor Kathy Rader had reservations on this subject saying the elderly could have heart attacks while shoveling.
Fire Commissioner Grant Grim's report noted there were 140 emergency responses in January. This related to 93 individual calls.
There were 260 EMS responses last month.
Grim urged supervisors to expedite installation of the backup generator for the township building so there would be another place where residents could go in case of power outages.
