Grad receives

Day award

Recent graduate James Szabo of Allentown was recognized with the Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Employers JoAnne Day Student of the Year Award at Lehigh Carbon Community College, Schnecksville.

The award recognizes achievements and contributions made by undergraduate students enrolled at member institutions who have completed an internship or co-op assignment, grants $500 to each winner of its four categories, respectively.

While the award categories are broken into four sections-technical, liberal arts, business and associates degrees, this is the first year PennACE has offered the award on the associate degree level, and Szabo is its very first recipient.

The JoAnne Day Student of the Year Award was created in honor of a career development professional.

JoAnne Day was a longtime colleague and friend of many involved in cooperative education, academic internships and career services and was active in many professional organizations.

She was the first president of PennACE in 2002 before losing a two-year battle to cancer in March 2005.

During the semester, students met one-on-one with the veterans whose service ranged from World War II to Operation Iraqi Freedom. They also hosted a brunch last Nov. 7 for retired service members and their spouses.

Each veteran received a copy of his or her oral history as a keepsake at the end of the semester.
