LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Valley places at Beast; Kids look toward Classic

Seth Lisa admits that the current state of the Northampton wrestling program is a mixed bag of results.

Some guys are where they need to be and some aren't. It's a scenario that is reminiscent of any wrestling program at the end of December, but one wrestler that Lisa feels is where he needs to be is 132-pounder Zach Valley.

Valley was the lone K-Kid to come home from the Beast of the East tournament over the weekend with a medal, taking seventh with a 1-0 win over Christian Innarella of Delbarton in the medal round.

"Taking seventh wasn't really what Zach wanted from the tournament," said Lisa, "but it was good for him to compete and battle back after some tough losses. I think we walk away from the Beast knowing that he's in good position right now on the season."

Valley reached the quarterfinals against Kevin Budock of Good Counsel, but lost 4-2 following a late takedown by Budock with less than 15 seconds left in the match to send him into the bottom bracket.

The nature of the difficult tournament increased when he took on Nazareth's Chase Zemenak for an opportunity to wrestle for third, but the Blue Eagle scored three points in the third period to come back from a 2-0 deficit for the 3-2 victory.

Freshman Danny Moran (106) had a good start to the tournament, as he reached the quarterfinals, but that would end quickly with two straight losses to end his ability to compete for a medal.

Bobby Fehr (170) was Northampton's only other shot at competing for a medal, as he went 3-2 over the weekend, losing a 3-2 decision to Connor Wagh of St. Paul's a round before the quarterfinals to drop him in the wrestle backs.

From there, Fehr battled to win his first two bouts before he dropped a 3-0 decision to Josh Llopez of St. Mary's.

With the Kids participating in the Hurricane Holiday Classic this Saturday and Sunday at Liberty's Memorial Gymnasium, Lisa hopes he can have a bounce back effort from his team, as well as a more balanced performance across the board.

"I think we're where we need to be for the most part," Lisa said. "We just need to be more aggressive and figure out how to close out more matches.

"Wrestling at a tournament like the Beast will certainly help us heading into Liberty's tournament and we want to improve from last year's medal performance and have five or six guys win medals.

"You always look to improve from what you did last year and this is another opportunity for our guys to do that."

Bobby Fehr was the only current K-Kid to reach the finals last year at Liberty, losing to Central Dauphin's Garrett Peppelman 19-6 in the 160-pound title.

Zach Valley took third at 126 and Michael Scheetz took sixth at 113.
