LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Girls look to get back to action

Thirteen days and five scheduled games into a basketball season, Northampton girls are off to a 2-1 start, but have dealt with two postponed contests as well.

The Konkrete Kids' scheduled opener against Pleasant Valley on Dec, 6 and this past Tuesday's Lehigh Valley Conference game with Parkland were postponed.

As it is, Northampton's nonleague opener was a 62-39 victory over Allen in the annual Yasso-Rothrock Tip-Off Classic at Freedom on Dec. 7.

Coach Jeff Jacksits' Kids then tasted defeat last Wednesday in Wilkes-Barre when highly regarded Holy Redeemer took a 69-47 win in a game that was postponed from the night before.

Northampton followed that with an LVC opener at Whitehall as the Kids won 43-24.

Then Tuesday's Autism Speaks game with Parkland was wiped out by snow. That game was to be a fundraiser as students from Parkland and Northampton were selling T-shirts for $10 as an autism fundraiser and both teams were to wear special game jerseys, according to Jacksits and Parkland coach Wes Spence.

The Pleasant Valley and Parkland games had to be rescheduled with the Parkland game reset for Thursday, January 9 and the Pleasant Valley game later in January.

In the meantime, Northampton resumes LVC play at Nazareth Friday before entertaining East Stroudsburg South in a nonleague game Saturday afternoon.

After that, it's the holiday break with Northampton traveling to Allentown Central Catholic for the Petey Crah Christmas Tournament where the Kids face North Hunterdon, NJ, in the first game on Friday. CCHS faces Pennsbury in the night cap with consolation and championship games slated for Saturday, Dec. 28.

In Northampton's win over Allen, senior Leandra Sterner led the way with 19 points and freshman Aja Blount added 11. Junior Giovanna Martinez had nine more.

At Holy Redeemer (a state class 3A powerhouse), Sterner was top scorer again with 14 points and Blount again had 11.

Then, in their LVC opener at Whitehall, the Kids pulled away in the second half and Sterner finished with 18 points. Blount had eight and Martinez had five.
