LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Girls crush Allen to open season

The Konkrete Kids routed Allen 62-39 in the annual Yasso-Rothrock Tip-Off Classic at Freedom.

The K-Kids, whose original opener was to be against visiting Pleasant Valley (it was postponed because of the weather), took a 8-0 lead against Allen and never trailed.

Leandra Sterner, an all-league selection in the Lehigh Valley Conference last year, set the pace for the Kids with 19 points. Freshman Aja Blount added 11 points and junior Giovanna Martinez had nine as Jacksits emptied his bench after the Kids took a 31-18 lead by halftime.

"We started slow, but played well once we got started," Jeff Jacksits said after his Northampton girls' basketball team opened the 2013-2014 season with a win Saturday.

"Everybody played but Kayla (Csencsits), who is sidelined with a foot injury. "We passed well and were unselfish in our ball-handling. Our high-low game went well, but we must tighten up on defense as we gave up seven three-pointers to Allen (five by Milesha Troche)."

Troche was the game's top scorer with 21 points as Stan Broyles made his debut as the Chicks' coach.

"We started Sterner, Blount, Autumn Klucsarits, Amber Farnholtz, and Ali Reppert," said Jacksits. "But that probably won't be our usual starting lineup. Zeniyah Sanders and Farnholtz had six points and we still have Erica Filipovits, Francesca Sanchez, Sophia Eckroth, Amber Saylor, and Lauren Sterner coming off the bench."

Northampton hit the road Tuesday for a game at Holy Redeemer and swings into LVC play Friday at Whitehall.

Next week's schedule has Northampton playing its home opener Tuesday against Parkland before visiting Nazareth Friday and then taking on East Stroudsburg South Saturday at home.

Other girls scored in the Yasso-Rothrock Classic had Central Catholic beating Nazareth 58-33, Bethlehem Catholic trouncing Parkland 59-35, Easton topping Dieruff 49-34, Liberty beating Emmaus 63-49 and Freedom stopping Whitehall 35-25.
