The Coplay Fire Department returned from Hellertown Sunday with three trophies.
Firefighters participated in the Four County Firemen's Parade Oct. 20, returning with second-place awards for two trucks and for marching.
"Second place out of 70 trucks, it's an accomplishment," said Chief Matthew Buskaritz.
Earning trophies were the 1983 Ford squad car and a 2010 KME vehicle. Jen Fendrick and Amer Craig also earned a trophy for marching in the parade with the fire department banner.
The department took five trucks and the full roster of 14 people.
"The station was empty when we left," said Buskaritz.
With mutual aid agreements in place, one of the Whitehall fire stations was on call in case firefighters were needed in Coplay that day. Fortunately, said Buskaritz, no one was needed.
Getting five vehicles ready for a parade required quite a bit of cleaning work.
"The previous week, we started Tuesday and we came in just about every night and put in a few hours," said Buskaritz.
He and firefighter Richard Craig estimated the parade included 15 or 20 award categories. Coplay did not enter specialized categories such as those for antique engines or large groups.
Because the fire department is so small, the awards were especially satisfying, said Craig.
"We were trying to work for one, not three," he said.
