A picturesque dam, often referred to as a mini-waterfall, is now gone.

Whitehall Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. said Wildlands Conservancy spearheaded a project to remove dams on the Jordan Creek.

The projects were part of the hazard mitigation program, which is intended to ease flooding along the Jordan Creek.

Hozza said the project offers several benefits including reducing flooding and restoring Jordan Creek to its original state.

"Jordan Creek may become more narrow, but deeper. The deposit of silt over the years will flow down," Hozza said.

Hozza said, however, restoration of the creek will take years.

Similar results are expected from a project in Darktown where the second tunnel at the Coplay Creek has been opened. Often, after heavy rainfall, Water Street has been closed to vehicles due to flooding.

A dam on the Lehigh River, near the site of the Hokendauqua-North Catasauqua Bridge, has been gone for years.

Conservation groups have pushed to restore the river and get rid of toxins. Various species of fish are now seen in the river.
