Eleven people attending an informal parks and recreation board discussed various issues the group could tackle.

The first step is for board members to select officers and set a meeting schedule. They will take that step 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21, in council chambers.

"When you walk around Coplay, there are a lot of things that have been deteriorating," said Councilman Steve Burker, chair of the parks and recreation committee, who is behind the resurrection of the parks and rec board. "Whatever it was it just never got done. We have a chance now."

Once the board is up and running, it will need to develop a plan of action which it will use in pursuit of grant money.

"My understanding is the money is out there," said Burker. "The answer's always 'no' unless you ask."

Among the potential projects are:

· Refurbishing the basketball and tennis courts located behind the fire station on Cherry Street. Burker said people have told him the courts are an "eyesore."

· Repairing lights and bleachers at Sammy Balliet Stadium.

· Looking at additional properties in town that could be utilized for recreation facilities such as picnic areas.

· Painting a rusty fence by the borough swimming pool and working to further improve pool facilities.

The group also discussed issues with youth sports caused by coaches expecting athletes to commit to just one sport, causing some groups to struggle to get enough kids.

"They expect you to eat, sleep and breathe whatever sport you're in," said Councilman Bill Leiner Jr.

Burker said recreation issues are important to people considering a place to live.

"They look at these things before they buy a house," he said. "What's in it for me? What's in it for the kids?"
