LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Active spring in Upper Mac

Upper Macungie Township supervisors had quite a few items on their agenda Feb. 7 but it didn't take long to get through them.

After approving the previous minutes and ordering payment of bills, they dove into the business at hand.

Supervisor Kathy Rader gave the recreation board report.

The rec commission elected Rich Kiser as chairman, David Kentner as vice chairman and Chuck Thomas as secretary.

The dog park grant application was denied. The board will reapply next year. The donation request letter raised $305.

The pick-up volleyball program appears to be a success. A good turnout prompted thoughts of continuing the program through March.

The SAT practice test is rescheduled for 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. April 13. Results will be released 6-7 p.m. April 23.

Game night is rescheduled for 6-9 p.m. Feb. 22 at Independent Park.

The tree trimming course is scheduled for 5:30-7 p.m. March 5.

Pet CPR and first aid is set for 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. May 25.

Two five-week tennis clinics are set for April 2 until May 2 and May 7 to June 6.

Supervisors are looking for an instructor for the junior golf clinic. Qualified individuals may contact the township office.

Several parks projects are proposed for this year.

New bathroom stalls and a complete rehab of the bathrooms will occur at Lone Lane Park.

The grange splash park grant was denied, so it will be resubmitted.

Two applications have been received for the open position on the recreation board. They will be reviewed and the member selected.

Chief Edgardo Colon told supervisors Ryan A. Mertus qualified for the police force and could be hired by the board as a new patrol officer.

By a unanimous vote, Mertus was added to the force.

The next Berks/Lehigh Regional meeting is tentatively scheduled for Feb. 18 at Station 56 in Trexlertown.

There is a possibility the site could be changed to Maxatawny.

It is proposed the equipment of the former Berks Lehigh Police Department be auctioned off.

Some thought was given to allowing other municipalities to bring surplus inventory to the site for disposal at the auction.

Officers from the former police force will be given the opportunity to purchase their old service Glocks before they are made available to the public.

Colon reported the total number of incidents involving the police department in January was 724.

They consisted of motor vehicle accidents, DUIs, traffic citations, non-traffic citations and parking tickets.
