Coplay column

With the passing of Tony Stanz, uncertainty remains over whether the borough will be without another business.

Stanz was owner of Tony's Hobby Shop, which was a fixture for decades in Coplay.

Commercial enterprises thrived for many years on Second Street when the pavement was filled with shoppers and those enjoying a night out.

It might be too soon to ascertain whether the hobby shop, once a pool hall, becomes a casualty to larger commercial enterprises.

The closing of Bill's Lunch last year dealt Second Street a blow, along with its legion of patrons. The popular restaurant years ago was called Sodl's, then later Hilltop. Many are hoping it reopens.

Across from the closed restaurant on North Second Street is the former Wachovia Bank, which shut down due to branch consolidation.

As its former owners had, the new owners of Wells Fargo at times marked the building and lot for sale or rent. However, the colonial style brick structure remains vacant, another site on Second Street not in use.

On a more positive note, the small brick front shopping plaza located on Chestnut Street, just off Second Street, still has its three units operating. They include a computer/electronics store offering repairs and upgrades on the east end, an Italian eatery in the center and an an insurance agency on the west end of the structure.

Years ago, a television repair shop and a state liquor store found at the location.

The three restaurants on Chestnut Street, spaced evenly apart, on opposite ends of the road, draw not only borough residents and families, but also those from out of town.

For awhile, some said the town needed a barber shop and an attorney's office. Now, the town has both on Chestnut Street.

The borough is without a doctor, but a physician's office is found just a couple blocks outside the borough. Townspeople have been going there for years.
