LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Coplay Column

Unlike Whitehall Township, Northampton, Catasauqua and Allen Township which have state and/or federal highways slicing through them, Coplay has no such ribbons of macadam or concrete.

The thoroughfare closest to resembling a state highway is Chestnut Street, linking Whitehall to Northampton, and Second Street, to a lesser extent.

At one time the borough had six gas stations on Chestnut Street. At that time there were plans to have the road become a part of the proposed Cement Belt Expressway. The plans, unfortunately, did not materialize,

Certainly the borough does not experience the number of traffic accidents that are found in more heavily traveled areas, but drivers have to pay attention to certain intersections in the borough as they approach the stop signs.

Coplay Police Chief Vince Genovese said so far this year, police recorded 22 hit-and-run crashes, 24 non-reportable crashes and 126 reportable crashes in the borough.

Motorists always have to be wary at Front and Chestnut streets because drivers making a left turn onto Chestnut Street from North Front have a sight issue to deal with.

Vehicles heading east on Chestnut driving to the Coplay-Northampton Bridge proceed downward on the slight incline.

The issue involves stopped motorists turning onto Chestnut whose line of sight is impaired due to vehicles parked on the south side of Chestnut.

In an attempt to make the intersection safer, borough police and public works personnel have installed a mirror across from the intersection. Positioned at the northeast corner at the bridge, the mirror makes it much easier for motorists to see what else is coming before pulling out to go west on Chestnut and into town.

Drivers traveling south on Second Street onto Front Street in Hokendauqua have a stop sign, while vehicles on Front Street in Hokey heading northbound onto Second or making a left turn onto Hokendauqua Street do not have a stop sign.

Too often you can observe a vehicle proceeding onto Front Street not paying attention to the approaching vehicle traffic.

Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh and other streets that intersect with Chestnut are at times the scenes of accidents. Vehicles stopped on the north sides of the streets, making a left onto Chestnut have to be careful, since parking is permitted on the south side of Chestnut.

Fender benders are not uncommon at the Giant Food parking lot.
