Northwestern golfers compete in District 11 Championship

The high school golf season came to an end last week for the Northwestern Lehigh team.

After winning 11 matches during the regular season, the most in program history, the Tigers sent a five-player line up to last week’s District 11 Championships as they were one of four teams to qualify for the Class 2A team tournament.

Led by Skylar Kern’s ninth-place overall finish, the Tigers finished with a team score of 357 for fourth place.

Schuylkill Haven won the boys team title with a four-player team score of 333. Two Hurricane players finished in the top three places individually. Mahanoy Area (352) was second, followed by Notre Dame of Green Pond (353).

Kern shot 12-over par 84 at districts, which were held Tuesday, Oct. 6 at the Steel Club. He made 10 bogeys and one double-bogey to go along with seven pars.

Kern qualified for district by finishing tied for 18th at the qualifying tournament a week earlier at Shawnee Golf Resort. There he shot 15-over par 87 to advance.

Cole Dynda qualified for districts by finishing in the top five at the Colonial League Championships to earn an exemption from the qualifier.

At the district championship last week, Dynda shot 14-over par 86 to finish tied for 158th. After starting on the 15th hole, Dynda made two bogeys to start and followed them with a pair of triple-bogeys to climb to 8-over par through four holes. Dynda bounced back with two birdies over his next three holes, but two double-bogeys and four bogeys over his final 13 holes derailed his round.

Jake Kozlowski, who led the Tigers at the qualifying tournament a week earlier, shot 94 at districts for 25th place.

At the qualifier, Kozlowski shot 11-over par 73 to finish in 12th place. He made eight pars, nine bogeys and one double-bogey over his round of 83 at Shawnee.

The rest of the Tiger team score at district included Mason Malosh (93) and Wagner Stracco (96).

Tamaqua’s Sam Vinc won this year’s District 11 Class 2A title with a 4-over par 76. He finished a shot ahead of Schuylkill Haven’s Eli Barton in second place. Alan Evans (Schuylkill Haven) shot 79 for third place with Palmerton’s Joey Soly one shot back in fourth place.

Saucon Valley’s Anthony Albano took this year’s District 11 3A title with an even-par 72, finishing three shots clear of Alex DiGiacinto (Nazareth) and Chris Gearheart (Pocono Mountain East) in a tie for second place. Conner Aspen (Southern Lehigh) was fourth at 4-over par 76.

Schuylkill Haven’s Giuliana Hughes shot 13-over par 85 for first place in girls Class 2A.

Southern Lehigh’s Lexi Miller earned the District 11 girls 3A title at a subregional tournament last Monday.

Parkland finished with a team score of 321 with Nazareth (324) second, follow by Southern Lehigh (336) and Pocono Mountain East (340).
