Barbara Campbell represented the Parkland Garden Club on Labor Day doing a design program on Centennial Stage at The Great Allentown Fair entitled “Designs Through the Seasons.”
Her designs were intended to encourage the audience to go home and try the design.
She went through the steps of making a design.
First is the choice of the container then the medium you are going to use, oasis, chicken wire, or water to place flowers.
Oasis is the most commonly used medium in flower arranging.
The first design she demonstrated was a Winter centerpiece that could be used as a centerpiece on a Christmas table.
The Spring design was a topiary design using yellow flowers because spring’s flowers are predominately yellow.
The Summer design was a line design using gladiolus. The medium used was chicken wire.
The advantage of using chicken wire is that if you want to take a flower out it is easier to change your mind where you want to place it.
Autumn was a POT-ET-FLEUR which is a creative design using flowering plants or a combination.
They may include cut foliage, branches with or without leaves, and cut or fresh or dried flowers. Cut plants are always included.
In recognizing the Semisquincentennial Campbell created a red, white, and blue design featuring a red pickup truck.
She entered this design into the Fair under artistic arrangements, “The Great American Road Trip.”
Another patriotic design was a Roundy Moundy which had red carnations as your mass flower, white roses as your filler flowers, and blue larkspar.
This was Campbell’s third year doing a program at the Allentown Fair in which she promoted the Parkland Garden Club.
