It’s opening night of the field hockey season, and the Salisbury Falcons are set for their Colonial League championship rematch with Northwestern Lehigh.
The player introductions are made, the National Anthem is played, and everybody is ordered out of the stadium because of lightning in the area.
With the season opener rained out and rescheduled for Sept. 29, the Lady Falcons had a little delayed gratification, but took out their frustrations with a pair of 8-1 wins once they finally did get to open their season.
Ellie Schneider has gotten off to a fast start to her senior season with three goals in each of the first two games for the defending district champion Falcons. Schneider added two assists and junior Ella Morgans added two goals and an assist in the opening 8-1 win against Palmerton.
Juniors Anna Grubb and Ryley Shoemaker added goals in each of the first two games with a goal in each game, and freshman Ava Morgans got her first varsity goal in the win over Palmerton before adding goals two and three against Catasauqua.
The defense has been effective in keeping would-be scorers from getting open looks on goal. Goalie Olivia Wilde has had to make just one save in each of the first two games.
The Falcons have a stretch of four games in four days this week. It starts with a nonleague game against Oley Valley and then three league games. Lehighton and Moravian Academy are at Salisbury for games before a trip to Northern Lehigh to wrap up the stretch of consecutive games.
