LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

NWL field hockey starts season 2-0

Mother Nature played a cruel trick on the Northwestern Lehigh and Salisbury field hockey teams last week.

The two schools were set for a rematch of last year’s Colonial League finals and just as the National Anthem ended the game went into a lightning delay.

Before long, heavy rain fell and the lightning continued to flash leading to a postponement of the game between the two rivals. They’ll now have to wait until Sept. 29 to face each other this season.

When they finally got to open their season, McKenna Church led Northwestern with a pair of goals in a 3-0 win over Wilson with Evelyn Alboucq adding a goal and an assist. Ella Schmidt and Riley Stout assisted on the other two goals for the Tigers.

Northwestern found a little more offense against Moravian Academy with the defense being just as strong as in the opener. The Tigers beat the Lions 5-0 behind Stout’s two-goal game. Alboucq added a goal and two assists with Julia Farber and Becca Gottlieb contributing to the offense with their first goals of the season.

Reese VanNorman and Ella Schmidt contributed assists for Northwestern Lehigh.

The Northwestern defense was so strong that Moravian Academy got just one shot on goal in the win.
