Northwestern girls soccer wins three straight games
Sophia Schaffer was kept out of the scoring column for the Northwestern Lehigh girls soccer team in its season opener. Since then she has scored twice in each of the three games her team has played and leads the team with six goals to go along with five assists, also the best on the team.
While Schaffer has resumed her role as the team’s offensive catalyst, she has also gotten plenty of support from other players as the Tigers have opened the year 3-1.
Playing a tough nonleague schedule, Northwestern opened the year with a loss to Nazareth in a 4-1 game. The only goal was scored by Juliet Snyder, who has a goal or an assist in every game this season. Snyder’s goal came on an assist from freshman Elliana Fluke.
In the three wins since then, the Tigers have allowed just two goals. Two other nonleague games went down as wins as Northwestern beat Abington Heights 6-1 and then shut out Blue Mountain 2-0. In addition to Schaffer’s two goals against Abington, a pair of freshmen, Sophia Varvarelis and Kaylynn Knauss picked up their first varsity goals with Knauss scoring twice in the game. Schaffer’s goals were the only offense against Blue Mountain in that contest.
Between those two games, Northwestern sneaked in a Colonial League win as they took down Palmerton 5-1. Fluke picked up her first varsity goal in the win and Ava Snyder recorded her first goal of the season for Northwestern Lehigh.
In goal, senior Hannah Newcomer and Brystol Hamm split the time between the pipes in the opener with Newcomer recording seven saves and Hamm getting her first three saves as a freshman.
The pair split time through the first three games before Hamm went all the way against Blue Mountain. Hamm now has nine saves on the season and Newcomer has eight.
Since their season opening loss, the Tigers have outscored their opponents 13-2 and now have a 3-1-0 record overall and a 1-0-0 record in league games.
After playing four times in the first week of the season, Northwestern has three games in four days this week, all of which are Colonial League games.
The Tigers are home against Jim Thorpe before making a trip to Palisades and then hosting Notre Dame of Green Pond on Friday.
