Northwestern Lehigh’s boys soccer program lost a number of good scorers from last year’s roster because of graduation.
The Tigers also lost some important players on defense.
For most programs, that might signal a rebuilding year but for Northwestern, a little moving players around and adding some new faces has kept things going with a pair of season-opening wins.
The big news from their season opener at Palmerton came when the final horn sounded and the game was official.
The 3-0 win was the 300th career win for coach Nate Hunsicker. Cole Mertz, the highest remaining point scorer on the team from last season, scored twice and Logan Shurr added a goal to start his junior season off right in the historic win for Hunsicker.
The reimagined offense then beat Blue Mountain 2-1 to give the Tigers a 2-0-0 start to the 2026-2027 season. Mertz added goal number three and Weston Killar added his first of the year off an assist from Mertz.
The defense has continued to be the stone wall that it normally is with just one goal allowed in two games. Goalkeeper Dean Carl has only been called upon to make one save in the first two games.
The schedule gets busier this week with games against Jim Thorpe, Palisades, and Notre Dame of Green Pond.
