Girls volleyball beats Saucon Valley, Pen Argyl

Northwestern Lehigh’s girls volleyball team has had trouble putting together back-to-back wins this season, but has also not lost multiple games in a row.

The result is a 2-2 start to the season, which kicked off with a difficult schedule.

In the season opener, the Lady Tigers had to travel to Southern Lehigh and came home with a loss. Lacey Clymer and Anna Ebeling both had six kills in the match and tacked on 10 digs. Senior Lexi George led the team with 18 digs for Northwestern Lehigh.

The Spartans beat Northwestern 25-15, 25-20, and 25-15. Southern Lehigh had a 42-22 advantage in kills and a 10-6 advantage in service aces. Last season the Spartans captured the Colonial League championship by beating Northwestern and were District 11 3A runners-up to Bethlehem Catholic.

Northwestern beat Saucon Valley in their next match by scores of 25-22, 25-20, and 25-18.

The Tigers went out of league play briefly to take on Freedom High School in their third match of the season. Ebeling had nine kills, Clymer had eight and Kayla Schaffer had seven, but it wasn’t enough as Freedom picked up a three set to none victory by scores of 25-23, 25-22, and 26-24 with the Tigers keeping it tight throughout the match. Freedom is 3-0 on the season.

The week ended with a 25-7, 25-14, and 25-9 win at Pen Argyl as the Green Knights struggled to keep pace. Maria Breininger and Clymer both had six service aces in the win.

Through the first week of the season, the team sees balance among their statistical leaders. George leads in two categories with 82 digs and 85 receptions. Clymer has 34 kills compared to 29 for Ebeling atop the team’s leaderboard. Cecelia Edgar has 14 blocks, Schaffer has 51 assists, and Breininger has 10 service aces.

Northwestern will look for their first back-to-back wins this season when they play at Jim Thorpe and then have a nonleague game against Blue Mountain, a home match against Catasauqua, and then another tough road game at Notre Dame of Green Pond.
