Falcon football loses in overtime

The Salisbury varsity football team dropped to 1-1 with a nonleague loss to Roxborough in overtime last Friday night, 34-28.

The Falcons built a 21-8 lead in the first half and were ahead 28-20 before the Wolves tied the game with less than two minutes left in regulation and won in it the first overtime.

Roxborough started the scoring in the game after a turnover on the opening kickoff led to a five-play Wolves scoring drive.

Ryan Terrell ran in from one-yard out for a 6-0 lead with 9:34 left in the fist quarter.

Terrell piled up 224 yards and three touchdowns in the game on 15 carries as the Wolves put up over 300 rushing yards against the Falcons.

Salisbury answered the Roxborough score with a two-play drive as Jadiel Gonzalez caught a 56-yard touchdown pass from Iovani Lopez for a 7-6 lead.

After the Falcon defense forced a Wolves punt, Salisbury mounted a five-play touchdown drive capped by a 10-yard touchdown pass from Lopez to Kivon Price-Perry to give their team a 14-6 first-quarter lead.

A Roxborough safety early in the first quarter closed the margin to 14-8.

On their final possession of the first half, the Falcons went 68 yards in seven plays to make it 21-8 with 1:16 left in the second quarter.

The second half opened with Roxborough taking back the opening kick off 80 yards for a score. The Wolves made it a one-point game on a seven-yard Terrell run early in the fourth quarter to make the score 21-20 in favor of Salisbury.

The Falcons responded on their next possession when Gonzalez caught a pass and shook off a few defenders before darting 65 yards to the end zone. Nick Lazaridis made his third extra point kick to put his team ahead 28-20 with 7:56 left in regulation.

Roxborough got the ball for its next drive at the Falcon 41-yard line and used six minutes of the clock. The Wolves ran all the ball on all nine plays of the drive, which ended with Terrell’s 24-yard scamper to pay dirt with 1:54 left in the game. Quarterback Javon Jones ran in the two-point conversion to tie the game.

In overtime, the Wolves took three plays to score from the 10-yard line. Terrell got the touchdown from three-yards out. Jones was stopped on the conversion.

The Falcons failed to get across the goal line in four plays from the 10-yard line.

Salisbury suffered a few injuries to key players in the game as two of their running backs left the game in the first half.

Junior Isaac Gross carried the load for the final three quarters and rushed for 45 yards on six carries.

Lopez completed 11 of 16 passes in the game for 242 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. Gonzalez hauled in three passes for 134 yards and two scores in the game.

It was the second straight big game for Gonzalez, but this one came on the other side of the ball.

In the Falcons’ 27-0 season-opening win over South Philadelphia, Gonzalez picked off three passes and took one for a touchdown. He also caught a 24-yard touchdown pass in the opener.

Jazavier Oquendo scored a pair of touchdowns against South Philly while rushing for 112 yards.
