Defense helps NWL boys soccer stay unbeaten

Even though the offense isn’t completely clicking yet, the Northwestern boys soccer team has gone undefeated in the early going of the 2026 season.

The Tigers added three more wins last week as they beat Jim Thorpe, Palisades, and Notre Dame of Green Pond.

The10-1 win over Jim Thorpe is the first time this season the team has scored more than four goals in a game.

Senior Cole Mertz scored five goals in the win against the Olympians and added three more against Palisades, while getting a goal and an assist in a 2-0 win over Notre Dame on Saturday. Mertz now has 80 goals and 65 assists in 83 varsity game.

Until Saturday, no other player on the roster had more than one goal.

Weston Millar broke that string and scored his second goal while adding an assist. The junior midfielder is getting a chance to take a higher profile with the team this season and is taking advantage of it with two goals and two assists in five games.

“There are opportunities for guys to step up,” said Northwestern head coach Nate Hunsicker. “And Weston is doing a good job for us this season. He keeps improving and he has good instincts.”

The defense has been so strong that it can take what it gets from the offense for now and still come out with a 5-0 record to start the year. On Saturday, Northwestern traveled Notre Dame of Green Pond and came away with a 2-0 win, which was the Tigers’ ninth straight victory over the Crusaders.

Northwestern has allowed just two goals this season and has three shutouts. The Tigers improved to 5-0-0 overall and 4-0-0 in Colonial League games this season.

Northwestern has one of the youngest rosters that Hunsicker has worked with in his time with the team, so starting 5-0 while getting players to develop and get on the same page with each other has been important.

“We had time in the summer league to start pulling things together and I think we’ll be a lot better at the end of the season than we are now,” he said. “Certainly, on offense and possibly defensively too.”
