Roughs look to get back on track

After his team’s 24-13 loss to Palmerton last week, Catasauqua head football coach Joe Henrich offered an honest evaluation of his team that has dropped three straight with a 1-3 record.

Yet, they Rough Riders were within striking distance of Palmerton.

“Being right there isn’t good enough,” offered Henrich. “We are not playing very good football. We’re too inconsistent, with poor execution.

“It all begins with practice, attitude and commitment to hard work daily. I have to do a better job of expecting harder work, better focus and consistent execution. We will strap it up and give it a shot again this week.”

On paper their football life won’t get any easier when they travel to undefeated Notre Dame (4-0) Thursday night.

Quarterback Aiden Reilly, who was 12 of 24 for 84 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, had a similar outlook.

“(Last) Friday’s game definitely was not my best performance at all,” stressed Reilly. “I made some good plays, but then also had some really bad decisions. I have to stop turning over the ball in key moments of the game and I take all the responsibility for that.”

Reilly sees an offense trying to find itself.

“The offense really is struggling to get things clicking right now,” added Reilly. “We need to find a way out of it and get things going for us offensively.”

One consistent bright spot for the Roughies has been freshman running back/wide receiver/cornerback Solomon Mosby. He ran for 13 yards and caught three passes for 10 yards.

“Mosby is doing a great job for us,” said his senior quarterback. “He’s a freshman obviously and he’s got a lot of talent. He’s still young and makes those rookie mistakes at times, but he’s a great all-around player for us and he has stepped up into the varsity role in a really good way.”

Reilly understands his team doesn’t have an easy task.

“Notre Dame is going to be a really good team,” said Reilly. “They will be one of the best teams we are going to see all year so it’s going to be a really good challenge for us.”

ROUGHIE RITES: Notre Dame won last year’s game, 58-0, and the Crusaders have won the last nine straight meetings. Catasauqua’s last win against them was in 2014 by a 28-14 score ... The Crusaders have won 16 of their last 17 games, their lone loss was to Northwestern in the District 11 Class 3A final last year ... Reilly has completed 38 of 74 attempts overall for 299 yards with three touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also has rushed for 99 yards on 22 carries ... Ruben Concepcion is the Roughies’ leading rusher with 185 yards and three scores ... Josiah Martinez has 135 yards and three touchdowns, and Mosby has 84 yards. Mosby also has caught seven passes for 24 yards ... Omar Pacheco Jr. had five catches for 41 yards with a touchdown and has 13 catches for 116 yards and four touchdowns for the season ... Tuari Wright had 11 tackles last week, and he has 24 for the season. Shane Bortz had seven stops against Palmerton, and has 17 on the season ... Notre Dame quarterback Tommy Murphy threw for 386 yards and seven touchdowns last week, and he has completed 59 of 77 attempts for 1,072 yards with 17 touchdowns and one interception. He also has rushed for 184 yards with three touchdowns. Aaron Gordon is the next-best rusher with 110 yards and three scores. Receiver Drew Boyd caught eight passes for 131 yards with three touchdowns last week, and he has 15 receptions for 302 yards this year. Boyd has 13 tackles and three interceptions, one for a touchdown. John Hull has a team-high 34 tackles.

PREDICTION (My season record 3-1): For Catty, there is never a good time in the season to see the team from Green Pond. Notre Dame is hitting on all cylinders, and they have outscored their opponents, 181-35. No team has been able to slow down Murphy via the air, and Palmerton’s TJ Gursky threw for 201 yards and two touchdowns last week ... Roughies may be able to slow their running game, but they also need to control the ball ... Roughies have plenty to straighten out, but this will be a difficult game to start. Coming back from vacation, coach Snyder can pick up a Catty Corner cheesesteak with ketchup for me ... NOTRE DAME, 42-14
