On Aug. 29, Catasauqua Communities That Care, along with Catasauqua Area School District and many other organizations, held an impressive outreach effort to the school district community at Sheckler Elementary School, 251 N. 14th St., Catasauqua. It was touted as the Live Well Be Well Roughie Style event. The district mascot is the Rough Rider.

There were numerous vendor tables providing education and awareness of their programs. There were also presentations, including from North Catasauqua Police Department on cyber awareness and Center for Humanistic Change on current drug trends, its SPARK program and a mock teen bedroom parent inspection training. There was a chair yoga session and several student performances on the Sheckler stage.

Special guests included the Catasauqua Community Bell Choir; North Catasauqua and Catasauqua fire departments; Catasauqua High School STARS Club, who sponsored a bean bag toss; and Student Resource Officer Elwood Buchman from Catasauqua Police Department.

The event featured a pig roast sponsored by Holy Trinity Memorial Lutheran Church, led by Pastor Brian Riedy. The proceeds of the food sale benefited the Catasauqua school music program.

A Pennsylvania Department of Education Migrant Education Program table was staffed by Judith Garcia.

Scouts of America Troop 94 also had a table. Northampton Regional EMS, Valley Youth House/Camp Fowler and Presbyterian Church of Catasauqua were present as well.

Other tables featured Center for Humanistic Change, staffed by Megan Moore; Nulton Diagnostics, represented by Sandra Rueda and Chelsea Breimann; Catasauqua Community Food Bank, staffed by Eugenia Emert; Catasauqua Community Choir representatives; Catasauqua Main Streets, staffed by Catasauqua Borough Council Vice President Kim Brubaker; Girl Scouts representatives; Catasauqua Garden Club, with President Carol Pierce, Cathy Rutman and Sandi Meuir; and the Public Library of Catasauqua, featuring Betsy Hillenbrand and Deb Mellish.

Music was provided by deejay AI, and there were games for kids.

The Live Well Be Well Roughie Style event offered attendees a wide range of education and information that contributes to better health. The organizations present were eager to assist CASD families and engage challenges with success that can improve overall wellness.
