It may not feel like back-to-school season is right around the corner. Many residents are still enjoying Musikfest, peak pool and beach weather, farmers markets, vegetable and flower gardens in full bloom, picnics, outdoor concerts and evenings spent around a fire bowl. Whether you’re a child or an adult, however, it’s time to start preparing for the new school year.

If you are in need of school supplies, several organizations are ready to help students put their best foot forward this school year.

The Lehigh Conference of Churches, 457 W. Allen St., Allentown, will hold its third annual Back-to-School Bash 1-3 p.m. Aug. 7. The event will feature free school supplies, food, games and giveaways.

Trinity Memorial Lutheran Church, 535 W. Emaus Ave., Allentown, will host a free back-to-school community event 4-7 p.m. Aug. 16. Children can receive free school supplies and enjoy outdoor games, a bounce house, food, a magician and free haircuts.

The Salvation Army, 144 N. Eighth St., Allentown, also will sponsor a backpack giveaway for Lehigh Valley children enrolled in grades 1-12. The event will be held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 20 and will include backpacks, school supplies, food, arts and crafts, games and gifts for the whole family.

While families gather school supplies and shop for clothing and footwear, Salisbury Township School District has been preparing to welcome students back for the first day of school.

A kindergarten parent and guardian information session will be held at Salisbury Elementary School 5:30-6:30 p.m. Aug. 5.

Kindergarten tours and bus rides at Salisbury Elementary School are scheduled noon to 2 p.m. Aug. 17 and 8-11 a.m. Aug. 21.

The PTO-sponsored Kindergarten Popsicle Playdate will be held 6-7 p.m. Aug. 19, followed by Salisbury Elementary School’s Meet the Teacher Night 7-8:15 p.m.

Salisbury Middle School will hold an open house 6:45-8:30 p.m. Aug. 20. Orientation Day for all kindergarten, fifth-grade and ninth-grade students is Aug. 24.

The first day of school for all students is Aug. 25.

Salisbury Elementary School will hold its first T-shirt Day Aug. 28. Now you’re up-to-date and ready for the school year.

Meanwhile, Musikfest is in full swing. Festivalgoers have been enjoying food, music and entertainment since preview night July 30. Festivities continue through Aug. 9 and will conclude with a fireworks display 10 p.m.

For those looking to keep their gardens flourishing into autumn, The Seed Farm, 5854 Vera Cruz Road, Emmaus, will host its fifth annual Fall Plant Sale. The sale will be held 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 15 and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 16. Shoppers can find a variety of cold- and frost-hardy plants, including cabbage, kale, herbs, flowers and native greenery.

The township’s yard waste drop-off centers remain open for disposal of yard waste and branches. The Devonshire site will be open Aug. 6 and 8, while the Franko site will accept yard waste Aug. 10, 13 and 15. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays.
