Third-seeded Lehigh-Bethlehem Senior Connie Mack won its quarterfinal game on July 15 against Forks Township, 3-2, before falling to Northampton, 6-0, in the Lehigh Valley tournament semifinal on July 17.

The quarterfinal contest went 12 innings late into the night when Lehigh-Bethlehem’s David Dunham hit a RBI double for the walkoff.

“It was like five at bats and nothing was working,” Dunham said. “Everyone, literally, everyone. We just kept going at it. Kept trying.”

Dunham shot the ball over the left fielder’s head.

“I saw it off the bat. I saw it kept flying, and I just ran, and Cole (Collins) scored,” said Dunham. “I was relieved, honestly. It got annoying, going back and forth, hitting, pitching, and all that.”

Lehigh-Bethlehem trailed, 2-0, heading to the bottom of the seventh inning.

“It was a tough one,” said Lehigh-Bethlehem manager Ryan Beck. “We just couldn’t get anything going. We were getting guys in scoring position but couldn’t sneak in a run. Bottom of the seventh, two out, the ball kind of fell our way, and we ended up tying it.”

But as the clock struck 10 p.m., so did Dunham.

It was kind of a repeat of the game,” said Coach Beck. “We felt as though at any moment we could score the winning run. Forks did a great job holding us and being competitive, but in the end, David ended up having an awesome hit. Cole scored from first base. He was running on contact.”

In the semifinal, each team kept the other in check until Northampton exploded for five runs in the fourth inning.

“We didn’t really hit the ball well tonight, so we’re gonna focus mostly on our hitting,” Beck said. “I think our pitching was good enough tonight. A lot of pop-ups for us, a lot of balls hit right to them, but I think we have a lot more in the tank than what we showed tonight.”

The Senior Connie Mack state tournament, in which Lehigh-Bethlehem will compete, was scheduled to have begun on July 23.
