Society planning holiday events
Northampton Area Historical Society is planning its celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The society is located in the former Siegfried Railroad Station at West 21st and Canal streets.
Irene Urban, society president, said because the nation is in its 250th year, the society is working on a display of events and documents leading up to the Declaration, its acceptance in 1776 and the aftermath of revolution and the Constitution.
In a letter to members, friends and volunteers in the society’s most recent quarterly newsletter, Urban wrote, “This July 4th we will be celebrating the 250th birthday of the United States of America. July 4th is the day the Declaration of Independence was adopted. How fortunate we are to have had such brave and intelligent men to have started our country. Thank God for these men and their success in this venture.
“We plan to celebrate this birthday at the Siegfried station with special displays and events. Check our June and September newsletters as well as our area’s local newspapers for updates. We hope to see you at the station,” the newsletter said.
Preliminary plans at the upcoming society’s 250th anniversary events include a reading of the Declaration of Independence, review of other historical documents, tours of the Siegfried station and possibly have speakers at events.
The developing plan for July 4 is a morning visit to the war memorials in Northampton Borough and at Zion’s Stone United Church of Christ, 51 Church St. Society members plan to clean up the war memorials.
Urban noted the historical society building is open 1-4 p.m. every third Sunday of the month from May through October. There is no cost to visit. There is a wide array of historical artifacts from Northampton and surrounding areas in the Siegfried station.
The society’s mission is “preserving yesterday for today and tomorrow.”
