Board discusses center opening, fire dept.’s 20th
The Weisenberg Township Board of Supervisors began their meeting June 8 approving an ag security area application for a 27-acres property in the 3300 block of Willow Run Road, Kutztown, after approving last month’s meeting minutes.
Weisenberg Volunteer Fire Chief Justin Oswald reported during his comments that the anniversary of the fire department continues, and planners are working in coordination with the township’s community center opening day events.
He said the confirmed attendees for the event include Cetronia Ambulance Corps, Pennsylvania State Police and Lehigh County Emergency Management, State Rep. Gary Day will be saying a few words to commemorate the event as well.
Oswald said free hot dogs and drinks will be available for attendees and events will include hands-only CPR training, fire extinguisher training using a simulator, a vehicle rescue demonstration and apparatuses/station tours and more.
Fire department supporters are also considering ordering some merchandise for sale including mugs, challenge coins, and hats to commemorate the event.
Oswald said as of June 2026 the department has 33 fire team members on the roster, with varying levels of certifications, participation and tenure.
Township Manager Brian Carl reported during the Weisenberg Community Center Advisory Committee comments that progress is being made on the community center.
Carl said he does have a few things he has to get approval on formally, but they all involve issues that he and the board talked about previously.
“We picked up the office furniture today, which was something that we had bid on at an auction. We did get enough furniture for the [new] township office. It came to $2,144.75,” he said.
The township had the sign built at a cost of $3,500, he said, and Tri State Exteriors ended up donating all the stonework on the building.
Carl said he did follow up on ordering the counter tops and it was something he got approval on a couple months ago at a cost not to exceed a certain number.
Eastern Surfaces was the lowest bid for counter tops and it was actually about $2,000 less than what he and the board had talked about.
Carl said the township has 48 vendors signed up for Community Day and the township will be mailing out postcards announcing its move July 28 and the Community Day open house Aug. 1.
During the engineers comments, township engineer Matthew Rieger, PE., with Barry Isett and Associates, reported the Blacksmith Road procurement is currently out to bid.
Barry Isett recently hosted a pretty big meeting, and it was actually well attended by about five contractors, Rieger said.
Once the documents are opened, Barry Isett will provide a summary to the township and then, presumably, it will be approved at the next board of supervisor’s meeting in July.
Reiger said the work still can’t start until Nov. 15.
Treasurer Jeffrey Stauss said during his report that the township just ended the discount period for the real estate taxes.
He said 90 percent have been paid so most of the money is in for the year from the real estate taxes.
“The 90 percent paid is higher than any other year,” he said. “We’re usually about 84 or 85 percent at the end of the discount, so that leaves $34,000 left in fire tax and $43,000 in real estate.”
Since the dog park and the dog park Go Fund Me account are both finished, he asked the board to close out the Go Fund Me account of $899.43 and transfer it to the general fund. The motion was approved. Carl said under township manager comments, the dog park, an Eagle Scout project by Benjamin Hawk, is pretty much done.
“I thought it turned out really nice,” Carl said. “He does need $2,381.57 from the township. We did previously approve whatever he wasn’t able to raise. He did raise somewhere around $3,000, so that number is less than what’s in the treasurer’s report because we’re already holding the Go Fund Me money.”
Carl said he did get the dog poop dispenser and bag dispenser and that he will get a sign with some basic rules on it. Otherwise, the dog park should be open later this month.
