Patel, Zhang win D-11 title

The Parkland boys tennis team is one win away from sweeping all three District 11 postseason championships in 2026.

Trojan sophomore Derek Yao won the district singles title two weeks ago. Teammates Manav Patel and Jacky Zhang earned the district doubles title last week.

This week Parkland won its first two matches in the District 11 team championships and will compete Thursday for a third championship in three weeks.

Despite having no seniors on this year’s team, the Trojans have a deep and talented roster that went 18-0 in the regular season with 15 shutout wins.

“We have a young team,” PHS head coach Lee Rizzotto said at the district singles tournament. “I didn’t have any seniors so everyone is coming back.

“The hardest thing for me is that guys one through nine are your starters, but guys 10, 11, 12 and 13, they are right there. I’m fortunate to have that level of talent around me. And they’re all great human beings. They have each other’s back. They have great camaraderie.”

Patel and Zhang were the top seeded doubles team at districts and one of three Trojan doubles teams that qualified for the event, held last Tuesday and Thursday at Lehigh University.

Patel and Zhang won their first match 6-0, 6-0 and earned a 6-1, 6-0 win in the quarterfinal round. After surviving a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 match in the semifinals, the Trojan duo beat Nazareth’s Vansh Singhal and Lorinc Von Platen 6-3, 6-3 in the title match.

Parkland’s Doyoon Kim and Tyson Noto were the No. 8 seeded team in the 16-team doubles tournament. They won their first match 6-3, 6-1 before falling to Patel and Zhang in the quarterfinal round.

The Trojans Noah Elijovich and Pranav Senthilkumar were unseeded for the doubles tournament and faced No. 3 seeds Chris Stone and Caleb Brown (Emmaus) in the first round, losing 6-3, 6-3.

Parkland entered this week’s district team tournament as the top seed and shut out its first two opponents.

The Trojans beat No. 8 seed Pleasant Valley Monday, 5-0 and then took down No. 4 seed Easton Tuesday to improve to 20-0 this season.

Yao, Patel and Zhang won singles matches against the Bears and Rovers, while Kim/Noto and Elijovich/Senthilkumar were victorious in doubles matches.

The Trojans are scheduled to meet either No. 2 seed Liberty or No. 3 Emmaus in Thursday’s title match at Lehigh at 3 p.m.
