Parkland boys earn league title

Radnor Rowlands wasn’t pleased with his second-place finish in the 100-meter dash finals at last week’s East Penn Conference Track and Field Championships.

Like any great athlete, the Trojan junior put the performance behind him and focused on the events he had in front of him.

He bounced back with wins in his next three races, including league record performances in the 4x100 relay and the 200-yard dash to lead the Trojans to a team title.

“The 100 was rough,” said Rowlands. “I didn’t have a good start. I was running stiff. I started doubting myself. I came back to my tent. My coaches boosted my morale. I stretched, cooled down and I was just ready to keep moving.”

He came back and anchored the 4x100 relay team to first place in a meet-record time of 41.89 seconds along with teammates Wesley West, Lincoln Clark and Jeremy Jean Baptiste.

Rowlands followed that with a first-place finish in the 200 in 21.66, another meet record.

“The goal was just to PR, which is 21.7,” he said. “But the expectation was to win. I didn’t want to let anybody down. It felt amazing. I crossed the finish line and looked at the board, saw 21.66. I was ecstatic. That made me so happy.

“After the 100, running the 4x100 and winning, that definitely boosted my morale so I could run such a good time in the 200.”

Rowlands was one of five Parkland individuals and part of two of the four Trojan relay teams that won events at the EPC Championships, held May 6-7 at Whitehall High School.

District 11 and EPC cross country champ Colin McGuigan took first place last week in the 3200-meter run. The junior finished in 9:25.55, less than a second ahead of Nazareth’s Jacob Casey in second place.

McGuigan also earned a medal for his second-place finish in the 1600, where Casey won in 4:23.34 with McGuigan crossing the line at 4;25.44.

Nmelichukwu Onwuzo won one hurdle event and took second place in the other, where Trojan teammate David Scherb took first place.

After Nmelichukwu posted the top time in 110 preliminary heats at 14.96, with Scherb (15.19) second, the teammates switched places in the final with Scherb running at 15.20 to win the event.

Nmelichukwu ran the final in 15.26 for second place last Wednesday. The senior already had a gold medal from Tuesday’s 300-meter hurdles, where he ran a 39.60 to edge East Stroudsburg South’s Elijah Couch (39.64).

Scherb, a sophomore, finished third in the 300 hurdles.

Senior Marcelo Castilla earned an individual gold medal in the 800-meter run last week. His 1:59.43 was the only time in the boys field under two minutes. Teammate Brendan Frank, a senior, was second at 2:00.72.

Parkland’s boys 4x400 meter relay team of Clark, Logan McEvoy, Cole Millhouse and Rowlands won a close race Wednesday evening in the rain to finish off a sweep of all three boys relays.

The foursome ran a time of 3:26.07. Emmaus came in second at 3:26.47.

Parkland’s boys 4x800 relay team of Frank, McEvoy, Angel Chamorro and Castilla won its race by a wider margin over Emmaus. The Trojans finished in 8:08.85, which was just off the 8:00.42 league record set by Parkland in 2023. The Hornets finished in 8:20.42 for second place last week.

The Parkland girls 4x400 relay picked up a gold medal at the meet in a close race against Stroudsburg. The Trojan foursome of Dhaniya Miner, Marley Boyle, Ana Gbur and Shri Desai ran a 4:03.28 for first place, with the Mountaineers coming in at 4:03.53.

Plenty of other Trojan athletes made trips to the medal stand last week. The top four finishers in each event earned medals.

Gbur finished second in 300 hurdles with a time of 44.88. Samantha Schultz was second in pole vault with a height of 11-feet. Kaley Seide finished second in long jump at 17-8. And Frank took second place in the 800 in 2:00.72.

McEvoy placed third in 400-meter run in 50.25.

Finishing fourth at the league meet for Parkland last week were Aubrey Delong (shot put, 34-4), West (200, 22.23), Cole Orloski (1600, 4:27.27) and the girls 4x800 of Kennedy Perkins, Boyle, Violet Forte and Leah Frew (9:50.07).

After both Parkland teams went 7-0 in the regular season, the boys cruised to the team title at last week’s league meet with 156 points. Emmaus was second with 106.5.

Easton’s girls team also cruised to a title last week with 126 points. Emmaus (85) was second. Parkland (74) finished fourth.

The Trojans were back in action this week at the District 11 Championships, scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday at Whitehall.

See next week’s Press for more about districts.
