Middle school honor society raises money for Lowhill Food Pantry
In its first year of existence, the Northwestern Lehigh Middle School Honor Society raised nearly $700 donating all of it to Christ Church Lowhill Food Pantry. The check was presented May 7 at the middle school.
The honor society held a dodgeball tournament to raise the money. The tournament depended on team participation and even included a “minute to win it” challenge to increase excitement and revenue.
The newly minted group has had a busy spring.
“We got started in March and just had the induction ceremony,” said Kelsey Schultz, one of the advisers. Eighth grade English teacher Ashleigh Albert is the other adviser.
“The principal asked us if we would serve as advisers,” said Schultz, obviously proud of the group. Working with the students has been rewarding both advisers agree.
For over 100 years, four pillars have been foundational principles of the National Honor Society. At the induction, the new members highlighted their relevance. Cameron Kahl, Jalyssa Kubat, Addilyn Metzger, and Norah Smith spoke about scholarship, service, leadership and character respectively.
The honor society was a welcome addition to the middle school offerings.
“My mom ran over to me and gave me a great big hug,” said Flaherty when he found out he was to be inducted with the group. “There wasn’t a day that she didn’t bring it up for the next week.”
“It was really rewarding to work with this group [of students],” Albert said. “They had a lot of great ideas for a fundraiser.”
The youngsters were proud of their efforts as well. “I think this was a great way to raise funds for a good cause,” Flaherty said.
