Lee golden for WHS

Whitehall’s track and field team competed in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference championship meet on May 5 and 6 at Whitehall High School where the Zephyrs captured four medals.

Edrien Lee clinched the gold medal in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.21.

“It was a little bit of pressure,” Lee said. “I just didn’t want to let anyone down and myself down, but I was really excited to run when I saw my place and I saw the girl who was second (in preliminaries). She ran a 12.05, and I went a 12.02, so that really motivated me to run today and get the place that I did. I was in a really good head space. I prayed before I ran. I was telling myself that, no matter what happens, just run as hard as I can and make everyone proud.

“After I crossed the finish line, I was pretty emotional because I’m doing this for my mom (Le Shan St. Clair), my coaches, and my dad (Quinton Lee) who passed, and I always wanted a first place medal for him, so I almost started crying when I finished, but I had to keep myself calm and collected, and I was just really happy when I finished.”

Lee also won a fourth place medal in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.66.

Llyneida Otanez placed fourth in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 45.74.

“I was feeling pretty confident,” said Otanez. “I’ve been working really hard this off season with Coach Mike McLaughlin and showing up really consistent. I knew this was my moment, so I gave it everything that I had, and I pray for moments like these. He told me to push through it all, drive through the hurdle. He said, on that curve, to push it no matter how much it hurts. I put my trust in it, and I did exactly what he told me. I was like, I can’t leave without a medal. It was at the end that I got it.”

In the girls 4x1 relay, Jaylene Wilson, Rose Zulu, Vinessa Eggleston, and Edrien Lee took fourth place with a time of 50.62.
