Edrien Lee eyeing a trip to state meet

Whitehall’s Edrien Lee always considered speed to be an asset. She used it to her advantage on the basketball court.

A few years ago, Lee decided to try and utilize her speed on the track. Sprints proved to work in her favor.

“I started considering track as a sport in seventh grade at a mock meet,” recalled Lee. “I’ve heard for a long time that I’m fast, especially on the basketball court, and I enjoy running.”

In the district meet last season, Lee notched a fifth-place finish in the 100 in 12.47, and a ninth-place spot in the 200 in 26.91. Her time in the 100 gained her a spot at states, where she was 16th in 12.56.

Lee realized her potential in the postseason last year. In her freshman year, Lee was seventh in the 100 at 12.87 in the 100, and eighth in the 200 at 25.97.

“During districts, I felt that I had a chance to make it to states because I consistently monitored my times throughout the season,” noted Lee. “I recognized that I had to work hard to keep up with the older sprinters, who seemed stronger. Working harder meant adding weight lifting to my training and improving my form.”

Head coach Nicole Richards saw Lee’s potential when she competed in the New Balance Nationals as a freshman. Richards also cited her workout schedule.

“She has made progress with workouts and added lifting,” said Richards. “She competed in New Balance Nationals as a freshman, but then wasn’t eligible after her sophomore season because the standards changed after her freshman year.

“She has a lot of potential and God-given talent. She qualified for the state meet last year on qualifying time and not on placement. That was a big deal. She ran well at states last year, and I think that is a credit to her experience at New Balance Nationals.”

Lee has been among the leaders in the 100 and 200 all this season.

She has kept a regular routine, and she believes it can lead her back to states.

“I think my routine is pretty typical,” said Lee. “I stretch and listen to music. Some of my favorite memories involve being with my team and simply encouraging each other.

“With continued hard work and training, yes, I believe I can make it to states again.”

Whitehall Edrien Lee is hoping to make it to the state meet this season.
