Hearty breakfast

Assumption BVM serves Sunday morning meal

A successful Sunday morning breakfast at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church, 2181 Washington Ave., Northampton, was held April 26. Parishioners and others streamed in after Sunday Masses for a hearty meal.

The menu included French toast, pancakes, scrambled eggs or omelet, sausage, bacon, ham, hash browns, juice, toast, coffee and tea. A special cheesesteak omelet was also offered.

The diverse menu choices, with generous portions, surely had no one leaving hungry. The meal was for either eat-in or takeout.

Church breakfast director Charles Walsh, of Seemsville, said he was delighted with the volunteers’ teamwork as they prepared food for the attendees, who streamed in after Sunday masses concluded. The up-tempo Walsh, who donned an apron as a hands-on leader, gave credit to all the volunteers who worked the event to make it a success. Because of the number of choices for breakfast, the kitchen volunteer staff labored at a frenetic rate.

Church volunteer Joy Nicosia, of Allen Township, cheerfully staffed the ticket sale table, which also offered youngsters drawing sheets and crayons.

Ed Hozza Sr., Kathleen and Hope Warren, Allison and Philip Hozza and Zane and Zachery Hozza shared breakfast together at the church event. There was enjoyable conversation about numerous topics and reconnecting for the families as the youngsters enjoyed themselves.

The Assumption BVM parish has a rich history that augmented the life of central and eastern European immigrants around the turn of the 20th century. These immigrants stimulated the development of the cement industry and other businesses that contributed to the economic and social growth of the area in and around Northampton.

In 1950, Pope Pius XII formally defined the Assumption of Mary as Catholic dogma, stating the Virgin Mary, at the end of her earthly life, was taken body and soul into heavenly glory. The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary feast day is celebrated Aug. 15, and this belief and celebration signify the sanctification of the body and serve as a promise of resurrection for believers.
