Falcons open April with wins

The first week of April saw the Salisbury High School baseball team win a pair of games by a total of 18 runs.

The Falcons put up 22 runs in two games and allowed just four runs to get wins over Moravian Academy and Palisades.

Markus Jones didn’t need a new month to spur his offense.

The junior third baseman has been a big part of Salisbury’s hit parade since opening day. Jones went 5-for-9 with three RBI in the two games, including a four-hit game against the Lions in an 11-1 win. Jones is now batting .520 through seven games with a 1.413 OPS and a team-leading 11 RBI.

Jones tripled and Dominic Gracia followed with an RBI single as the pair put the Falcons up 2-1 over Moravian Academy in the top of the third inning. In their 15-hit barrage, Tanner Kuder and Garrett Leiner each drove in two runs and Nate Nunez gathered two hits in the game.

Once they’re on base, the Falcons are dangerous. They stole six bags against Moravian and have stolen 27 bases in 31 attempts this season.

Nunez is just behind Jones in offensive output with a .500 average, a 1.377 OPS, and seven RBI.

Sophomore Tanner Kuder had a two-run double against Palisades to spark a four-run fourth inning rally to bring Salisbury back from a 3-1 deficit to a 5-3 lead. An inning later, a run scored on a fielding error and a sacrifice fly from Kuder and RBI single from Leiner made it 8-3.

Freshman Isaac Gross hit his first varsity home run in the seventh to make it 9-3 and Jones later delivered a two-run single to cap the scoring at 11-3.

Alex Lees allowed just three hits and one walk in throwing a complete game against Moravian Academy with 11 strikeouts. Josiah Kuhns allowed four hits and a walk as he too threw a complete game in his start against Palisades in the 11-3 win. Kuhns needed just 87 pitches, 60 of which were strikes, over seven innings to finish off the Pirates.

As a staff, the Falcons have a 2.76 ERA this season and are 4-3 overall and 3-3 in Colonial League games this season.

Salisbury hosts Southern Lehigh on Wednesday and then plays at Catasauqua on Friday. The Spartans (5-1) lead the South Division with Salisbury hanging 2.5 games behind. They start next week at home against Northwestern Lehigh.
