Horvath, Finn win EPC gold
Liberty seniors Thomas Horvath and Finn Brown were crowned No. 2 doubles champions at the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Boys Tennis Tournament on April 16 at Freedom.
Horvath and Brown defeated Northampton, 8-1, in the quarterfinal and Emmaus, 10-3, in the semifinal.
“We were hyped to get to that last one,” said Horvath, a senior.
Brown is also a senior, but this year was their first playing together as a doubles team and were the top seed.
“Coach (Chris Conrad) had us do a lot of conditioning beforehand, so we were prepared for the heat, and ready to run,” said Brown.
The Hurricanes defeated Parkland in the final, 9-9/7-0.
“We were coming back from losing, so getting that tiebreak was a victory in itself,” said Horvath. “We knew they were tired, and we were playing off that. One thing about us, we’re really good under pressure. We always say we’re always down, and we always come back. I was just so thankful to be here.”
Horvath and Brown agreed that playing in the EPC No. 2 doubles final was the most fun they’ve had all season.
“We usually end up down, 40-15, and then we always find a way to come back,” Brown said. “We came up to the net and put the ball away. It was amazing energy from our teammates and parents, sitting in the crowd and cheering us on.”
Liberty singles players Erik Peterson and Liam Bulman placed second at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.
Peterson beat Pleasant Valley, 8-0, and Easton, 10-4, before losing to Parkland, 10-8.
Bulman defeated Whitehall, 8-0, and Stroudsburg, 10-0, before losing to Parkland, 10-4.
At No. 3 doubles, Aneesh Tumma and Connor Terefinko placed third after beating Pleasant Valley, 8-4, losing to Stroudsburg, 9-9/8-6, and beating Easton, 8-2.
In the last match of the day, Gio Piccini and Sean Haas came in second at No. 4 doubles after beating Bethlehem Catholic, 8-2, Emmaus, 10-5, and losing to Parkland, 10-2.
“Sean has a strong baseline game, and Gio has a strong net game, so they’re kind of like yin and yang,” said Coach Conrad. “They help each other out and set each other up for points at the net.”
In team results, Parkland won the EPC tournament, and Liberty was the runner-up.
“With Parkland being the team to beat right now, we were going in with the expectation that we’d be right there with them,” Conrad said. “Today, we were there, but we have some work to do.”
