Canes look like contenders again

Liberty was always going to be a formidable force on the diamond this season, but the Hurricanes look like they will be in the title hunt again this spring.

Liberty (9-4) has won six of their last seven games, but enjoyed their best stretch of the season with wins over Nazareth (9-4), Freedom (7-6) and Allen (10-4) last week.

Beating two of the top teams in the EPC and your rival is always a good thing, but head coach Andy Pitsilos feels his group is coming together.

“The kids are getting more acclimated to varsity speed and pitching, as well as being on the big stage,” Pitsilos said. “I think nerves for new players is always an obstacle. So, with a season where it has taken us more than half the season to come up with consistency, maybe we are on the right track.”

Liberty’s recent stretch has pushed them to the top of the District 11 6A power rankings and have them second in the conference behind Parkland (9-4).

The ‘Canes have four games this week with East Stroudsburg South (6-7), Bethlehem Catholic (4-9), Northampton (10-3) and Wilson West Lawn.

It’s a week where the Hurricanes can keep their hot streak going, as they look to stay on top of the baseball landscape.

“The culture puts our expectations high which might cause kids to be nervous at first,” said Pitsilos. “They have to just get over that.”

Freedom dropped two of three games last week, losing to Northampton and Liberty, but topping Pleasant Valley 5-3 over the weekend.

The Pates look to stay in the playoff hunt with games against Stroudsburg (4-8), Nazareth and Southern Lehigh (10-2).

Bethlehem Catholic picked up two wins last week over Emmaus and Easton to get them back on the radar.

The Hawks have a tough slate ahead this week with Pleasant Valley, Liberty, Nazareth and Lansdale Catholic.
