Four Trojans win league titles

The Parkland girls wrestling team took first place at the inaugural East Penn Conference girls wrestling championships.

The Trojans crowned four individual champions and saw four other wrestlers finish in the top four places in their weight class at the event, which was held Tuesday, Feb. 6 at Stroudsburg High School.

Ella Hesener, Saige Rittenhouse, Abigail Taylor and Kelsey Gelb all won league titles last week, while Lily Snook reached was a second-place finisher.

Hesener (100) started in the quarterfinal round and pinned her opponent, Janalice Pellot-Feliciano (Pocono Mountain East) in 4:43. She won her semifinal match over Nazareth’s Chelsea Dressler by a 15-2 major decision and pinned Pocono Mountain West’s Seretta Manuel in 4:48 in the 100-pound title bout.

Rittenhouse (118) pinned Gabriela Chevere (Northampton) in 1:05 in the quarterfinals and put Nazareth’s Emilie Capron on her back in 3:33 in the semifinals. She pulled out an 8-6 (SV-1) win in the title match over Easton’s Maiya Lang.

Taylor (124) pinned Nazareth’s Ella Daubert in 2:43 in the quarterfinals before earning a 3-0 decision over Easton’s Dannielle Wiliams in the semifinals. Taylor won her title bout over Pocono Mountain West’s Autumn Kanas by a 12-4 decision. Gelb (155) pinned all three of her opponents at the league championships, all in the first period. She dropped Allyson Schwalm (Emmaus) in :32 in the quarterfinals before showing Dastiny Rios (Liberty) the lights in :53 in the semifinals. Gleb put Summerose Footit (Pocono Mountain West) on her back in :51 seconds in the 155-poudn final.

Snook also pinned her first two opponents in the first period. She pinned Nazareth’s Sophie Swaitek in 1:13 then finished off Freedom’s Scarlet Morey in 1:05. Pocono Mountain East’s Carlie Ciresa earned a 6-3 decision over Snook in the title bout.

Sylvan Parham (112) and Shannon Fratus (170) both took third place at leagues, while Danica Butch (130) finished fourth.

Parkland finished with 169 team points to beat second-place Easton (162) and Pocono Mountain West (135) in third place.

The team will be back in action with the girls District 11 Championships, scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 18 at Easton Middle School.
