LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

WHS 13-1 on the mats this season

Among the area wrestling powerhouses like Nazareth, Easton, and Notre Dame to name a few, Whitehall’s wrestling program is a slow blip on the radar.

Over the years, the Zephyrs have had their share of individual standouts, but their overall team performances didn’t quite stack up with the area’s more renowned programs.

But this season, things have changed on Mechanicsville Road.

The Zephyrs began this week with a 13-1 dual meet record, a respectable 18th-place finish at the Bethlehem Holiday Classic, and they won all five dual matches at both the PM Gauntlet Duals at Blue Mountain High School as well as the Lehighton Indian Duals.

Their lone dual blemish has been a 44-27 loss to Nazareth in which they recorded four pins.

Head coach Tim Cunningham has relished the team’s success, but he knows there are plenty of challenges ahead.

“We are making daily improvements,” said Cunningham. “We area t 13-1 right now, but we have a really busy and tough three weeks coming up.

“Those weeks will help us gauge where we are. We will know what we will need to work on for the postseason.”

The Zephyrs have been able to field a full lineup on a regular basis. They have been bolstered by a duo of brothers.

Sophomore Wilmont Kai leads the lineup at 107 with a sterling 19-1 mark. Kai finished third at the Bethlehem Holiday Classic. Trokon, his brother, has a 10-4 mark at 139.

Senior Seth Pascoe has a 17-2 mark at 152, and fellow senior Damond Pascoe is 15-3 at 127-33. Sophomore Kade Pascoe is 14-5 at 114.

Junior Nolan Schmeckenbecher is 14-2 at 133, and senior Jack Kocher is 10-3 at 189.

Cunningham noted the contributions of Wilmont Kai along with the Pascoe brothers.

“Each of these guys come into the room ready to work,” added Cunningham. “They make daily improvements, and they are doing the little things that make you better. They go out, compete, and score points.”

Two of the biggest surprises have been freshman Rocco DeLucia, who has a 13-5 slate at 121, and sophomore James Hopkins, who is 18-2 at 189-215.

“Both have been working really hard on their fundamentals,” said Cunningham about his young pair. “They are fine tuning their technical skills, which is showing up on the mat.”

The Zephyrs have meets with Dieruff (Wednesday) and Bethlehem Catholic (Thursday) before they venture to Delaware for the War at the Shore tournament.

Cunningham is confident his team can maintain its status.

“We always look forward to see how we can compete against the best competition,” he said. “We are focusing on the process of getting better and sticking to giving maximum effort in every match.”
