Throughout the month of November, Liberty HS was full of new adventures for students, establishing a wonderful tone for the 2023-24 school year.

The National Honors Society induction was held Nov. 1 for a select group of 11th and 12th graders, who consistently show their commitment to their community and academics. The ceremony was led by advisers Elizabeth Wiggins and Susan Bieber, accompanied by guest speaker Shannon Patrick, who encouraged students to keep pushing the boundaries of what it means to lead by example.

The induction also included officer speeches from seniors Neil Rana, Julia Medaska, Jordan Thompson, Marisa Lamparella and Ethan Hawkes.

The Liberty HS Theatre Company held shows for its fall play, “Radium Girls,” Nov. 16 and 18.

With excellent performances from leads Sophia Quartuch (Grace Fryer) and Cameron Dunham (Arthur Roeder), the audience witnessed a story which is, more than anything, human. “Radium Girls” adapts the real-life story of Grace Fryer, a dial painter working for the U.S. Radium Corporation.

Dunham, a sophomore, experienced joy as a performer through analyzing the complexities of his character. Attaining the knowledge he gained from such a deep dive allowed him to develop a stronger appreciation of the show as a whole.

With new clubs growing each year at LHS, one of the fastest growing for the 2023-24 school year, Aevidum, takes a deeper dive into mental health and how we can apply advocacy for such into our school day.

Everyday opportunities such as the two-minute pause and the peace room have been providing students with healthy outlets for the past two years. The two-minute pause allows students to collect their thoughts at the beginning of each class period, as peaceful sounds play through the school’s overhead speakers in the classroom, relaxing the mind as you prepare yourself for your next class. The peace room is a safe space in which students can talk to counselors/therapists or simply do activities that may allow them to calm down from the spot they may currently be in.

While being a good start, at LHS there are still many uncharted opportunities and endless possibilities.

Aevidum club members attended a seminar at Lehigh University Nov. 30, where they met with professionals and students from other schools to explore how schools approach student mental health.

Students listened as those who have struggled shared their stories. Time was also provided for attendees to ask questions concerning their own mental health journeys.

From this, the club hopes to make LHS a school that can pioneer what it means to advocate for mental health. With upcoming projects such as school murals, establishment of safe spaces, and more seminars to come, Aevidum is an activity with which every student at LHS should consider becoming involved.
