Trojans come from behind for girls soccer win

The Emmaus High School girls soccer team had a back-and-forth last two weeks. The Green Hornets lost their regular season finale, but bounced back with a thrilling overtime victory over Nazareth in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference quarterfinal round this past Monday evening.

The Green Hornets concluded the 2023 regular season with a 3-1 defeat on the road at rival Parkland, the conference’s regular season champion and top overall seed, last Wednesday, Oct. 11. Emmaus held a lead after scoring the game’s opening goal with just 24 seconds left in the first half. Freshman Lizzie Bender scored the goal, which put he Hornets on top at intermission.

The Trojans, however, answered with three goals in a span of 10 minutes in the second half to win the game 3-1.

The Hornets finished the regular season 12-3-1 in the EPC and are 13-4-1 overall. Parkland had an 8-4 advantage in shots and 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Ashley Stine finished with five saves in goal.

Against the Blue Eagles, Emmaus scored the opener and then tallied the winner in overtime to advance on to the semifinals.

Kam McWhinney sent in a ball off a corner kick early in the second half that was finished off by Madison Shutkufski for the game’s opening goal. After Nazareth tied it with just 4:21 left in regulation to force the game into overtime, McWhinney took it into her own hands and netted the winner. It was the second game these two teams played this season and the second time they went to overtime. In the game back on Sept. 6, the teams finished in a scoreless tie.

Emmaus will now take on the top seed Parkland in the semifinal round.
